While the 5G New Radio (5G NR) network rollouts are in full swing, technology strategists are already offering up visions that look far beyond to 6G. Research on the sixth generation is an investment in the future that is already starting to take shape and is expected to be launched around 2030. To support the next generation of wireless communication mandates revolutionary technology components that call for new ways of testing.

Academia and key industry players have identified several research areas for enabling the next generation of wireless communication. Rohde & Schwarz is deeply involved in diverse R&D projects including artificial intelligence and machine learning , integrating sensing and communication (ISAC), sub-THz communication, as well as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces.
Breakthrough Innovation in Sub-THz Research: Specialized Test Solutions Opening New Frontiers
New dedicated W and D band test solutions for the sub-THz research, for example, enable researchers to characterize devices and circuits for beyond 5G with frequencies up into the THz range, obtaining much wider bandwidths.
Achievements in the ISAC field could enhance existing applications, for instance in the automotive industry, or create new use cases in data communication and environmental sensing (e.g. for surveillance, ehealth, industrial or drone applications). Finally, using trained machine learning models for signal processing tasks like channel estimation, equalization and demapping will further optimize the air interface compared to present-day 4G LTE and 5G NR networks.
Paving the way for the next generation of mobile communications, the Rohde & Schwarz booth at Israel’s NewTech Expo will offer a deep dive into the future of 6G technology. Setups will focus on Terahertz (THz) communications breakthroughs and the company’s innovative test solutions in this field, including the SFI100A Wideband IF Vector Signal Generator.
