The shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) automobiles to electric vehicles (EV) has come with an array of new subsystems and components that introduce new EMC considerations. The level of complexity involved in automotive EMC testing increases with dynamic driving conditions where manufacturers not only have to refer to the framework standards offered, but must also improvise and establish new internal standards to ensure the vehicle and its internal components all function properly under all driving conditions. A number of challenges may arise when building a suitable test bench that thoroughly tests EVs and electrical components. Electric (EV) and hybrid electric (HEV) vehicles have both high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) electric systems. The LV systems are typically unshielded (infotainment, lighting, sensors etc.) and HV systems (battery packs, inverters, electric motors etc.) are shielded. The HV systems ranges from 400 V to 1500 V and the LV system ranges from 12 V to 48 V. The switching operations in HV systems can generate significant electromagnetic noise that may couple into the LV system and degrade performance or cause malfunctions.The HV/LV coupling tests, as defined in CISPR 25, specify the test setup in which HV systems are modified to inject electromagnetic disturbances at predefined levels, depending on the classification of the equipment under test (EUT). These tests also outline methods for measuring the coupling attenuation between HV and LV systems. Additionally, they define procedures for measuring conducted emissions (current and voltage) on LV systems during HV system operation. Furthermore, the standard includes methods to measure radiated noise (electric field) emissions generated when operating HV Systems. The HV/LV coupling tests are emission tests in line with CISPR 25 but some require an immunity test setup to inject disturbance into the system. This application note describes how to set up R&S®ELEKTRA and perform HV/LV coupling attenuation measurements.

Reverberation Chambers (RVC) have become popular as an alternative to Anechoic Chamber (AC) facilities for electromagnetic emission & immunity tests. Unlike AC, RVC reflects waves creating multipath environment. EMC testing using reverberation chamber is accepted in various EMC test standards across different industries. The RVC is cost effective allowing high field strength generation without excessive amplification needs, eliminates the need for complex positioning of antennas and DUTs increasing test speed and simulates real-world electromagnetic environments more accurately. To ensure accurate and efficient testing, specialized EMC test software is required for data acquisition, automation, and analysis. This application note describes how to setup Elektra and perform measurements in RVC.

The R&S®ELEKTRA EMC test software is the successor of the R&S®EMC32 EMC measurement software. Like the R&S®EMC32 EMC measurement software, the R&S®ELEKTRA offers a solution that controls complete EMC systems and automates measurements on equipment under test (EUT) that is being tested for emissions (EMI) and immunity (EMS) compliance. It has more features and test types compared to R&S®EMC32.As both software platforms use different file formats, R&S®EMC32 users who upgrade their existing software to the R&S®ELEKTRA platform need to perform a file conversion before migrating their data to the R&S®ELEKTRA platform. This is done by using the R&S®ELEKTRA Migration Tool, which is installed automatically with each R&S®ELEKTRA installation.This Application Note describes how to use the R&S®ELEKTRA Migration Tool (version 4.4 onwards) for converting the backup data into the XML format that can be interpreted by the R&S®ELEKTRA software. It also provides recommended conversion steps (Chapter 5) and troubleshooting tips (Chapter 6). For instructions on migrating the data using R&S®ELEKTRA Migration Tool below version 4.4, refer to the R&S®ELEKTRA user manual. For better user experience, we recommend using the latest software version for migration.This Application Note does not describe the steps to backup data using the R&S®EMC32 or R&S®ES-SCAN software. For procedures on how to do so, refer to their respective manuals.

Template settings streamline the generation of graphics and tables, allowing efficient analysis across frequencies, accessory positions, and types. This application note describes the different template settings in R&S®ELEKTRA related to graphics and tables. It also illustrates how the final outputs, presented as tables and graphics, show the measurement results for different configurations.

This tool is intended to support on transferring transducer data from and to local files to the R&S receivers and the R&S®ELEKTRA software. It allows editing, creation and deletion remotely on the instrument or software and enables transferring transducer data between files of all common formats and the receiver/software. Many common CSV or TXT based exchange formats for calibration data were implemented so allow importing of those data to the instrument or R&S®ELEKTRA software. Support file formats are: csv (most common for data exchange), tdf (format used on the instruments), s1p and s2p (commonly used for network analysis) and txt.
