LDACS - the new air-to-ground communications standard

LDACS (L-band Digital Aeronautical Communications System)

The new air-to-ground communications standard

Shaping the future of air traffic management

European aviation aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with an interim goal of 55% reduction by 2030. To achieve this, a fundamental transformation of Air Traffic Management (ATM) is required.

Digitalization is the key, with initiatives like SESAR and technologies like LDACS (L-band Digital Aeronautical Communication) enabling secure and real-time data exchange. This aims to make air traffic more efficient and environmentally friendly thanks to new efficiency-driven, operational ATC concepts, like the four-dimensional (4D) trajectory-based operations concept or sectorless flying.

Rohde & Schwarz is at the forefront of this revolution

Leveraging decades of experience in VHF, UHF, and HF communications, we are actively participating in different development initiatives, including:

  • PaWaDacs project: Developing the LDACS avionic demonstrator and demonstrating IP-based LDACS cell handover.
  • FCDI: SESAR project enhancing the maturity of LDACS avionic implementation with end-to-end communication tests.
  • MIAR: SESAR project demonstrating LDACS-enabled integrated navigation solutions and APNT services through flight trials.

Building on the success of these initiatives, Rohde & Schwarz has taken a significant step forward by designing and implementing an LDACS transceiver demonstrator in the size of an avionic form factor (ARINC 600). This development is a key component of the PaWaDacs project, which is funded by the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

PaWaDacs project scope and goals

The project stretched from 2022 to 2025 and two ground stations have been installed at an operational DFS radio station to implement two coverage cells. The goals that have been achieved in the project are:

  • Conducting interoperability tests between different vendors
  • Verifying seamless handover between two cells for seamless IP connectivity
  • Implementation of the demonstrator in an avionics-sized form factor

As a key contributor to LDACS standardization within ICAO, Rohde & Schwarz had successfully validated LDACS capabilities during real flight tests. This expertise had positioned us to play a leading role in shaping the future of LDACS and creating a more efficient, sustainable, and connected airspace.
