NG-UWB testing

Ultra-wideband (UWB) and next-generation ultra-wideband (NG-UWB)

Ultra-wideband (UWB) is a pulse radio technology that uses low transmission power radio waves over a wide frequency spectrum. It is a short-range technology with applications such as:

  • Real-time location systems (RTLS): Identifying the precise position of an object within a short range
  • Secure access control: Determining the proximity of a user’s device to a secure entrance
  • Asset tracking: Finding and allocating objects
  • Smart home and IoT: Location-based services inside the home, such as smart home electronics control
  • Extended reality (XR): Enhancing XR experience by enabling better spatial tracking and localization

UWB is now a mainstream technology, with widespread adoption in smartphones and other smart devices. The next-generation ultra-wideband (NG-UWB) seeks to:

  • Improve ranging performance
  • Increase data transfer capabilities
  • Introduce new coding schemes to improve link budget and coexistence
  • Enable standardized sensing capabilities

NG-UWB and IEEE 802.15.4ab

The foundation of NG-UWB consists of three enhanced modulation schemes that are all based on the high pulse repetition frequency (HPRF) schemes introduced in IEEE 802.15.4z. There are two long-range and two high data rate modulation schemes.

NG-UWB will also be extended to include a low latency communication mode that supports low-density parity-check (LDPC) coding and dynamic adaption of the used modulation scheme.

Another important feature is multi-millisecond (MMS) ranging, which will segregate the UWB ranging packet into fragments. These fragments will be sent in consecutive millisecond time slots to obtain additional power budget. Further gain can be achieved by using narrowband communication in the control phase. This narrowband-assisted (NBA) MMS UWB ranging applies an offset quadrature phase shift keying (O-QPSK) physical layer in the 5 GHz band.

This will unlock several UWB applications. Some emerging applications are:

  • Tap-free payment
  • High-resolution audio and video
  • Advanced sensing and radar capabilities
  • Presence detection and occupant monitoring
  • Intrusion detection
  • Vital sign monitoring

Your 802.15.4ab test challenges

IEEE 802.15.4ab PHY test requirements are largely the same as those already defined in IEEE 802.15.4z and by regulation.

Accurate measurements at high frequencies over the complete UWB bandwidth are the foundation of typical transmitter and receiver measurements, but there are still new topics to be considered:

  • MMS ranging schemes, especially in the case of NBA MMS UWB ranging, which requires the measurement of the O-QPSK modulated signal as well as the combination of both physical layers, UWB and NB.
  • New physical layer for sensing, with a specific test for the new pulse shape, which has minimum sidelobes.
