A new regulation requires all smartphones sold in the European Union from March 2022 onwards to support caller location for 112 emergency calls. To ensure this feature, the devices must be compliant with several positioning systems as outlined by the European Commission. Rohde & Schwarz announces an extension to its R&S TS-LBS location based services test system, making it the first test solution available to perform the necessary LBS compliance tests. Certification service provider CETECOM has already started first E112 testing using these test sequences

To further exploit the huge potential of 5G, the wireless industry has continued to develop the standard up to Release 16, and development continues. But technology does not stand still, and even as 5G presses forward, a new generation of cellular technology is emerging. Cutting-edge 6G research is already underway at communications equipment manufacturers and research institutions, and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) is a major area of interest in 6G research. Rohde & Schwarz, with Tsinghua University and Actenna Technology, recently completed an evaluation and trial of RIS technology to comprehensively evaluate the effects and performance of RIS deployment.

The ESSOR project’s next milestone will be to test the ESSOR HDRWF on a radio from Germany’s Rohde & Schwarz. Germany and Rohde & Schwarz joined the programme at the end of 2020. The European a4ESSOR consortium has successfully performed interoperability tests using the new ESSOR High Data Rate (ESSOR HDRWF) waveform. These tests are part of the ESSOR (European Secure Software defined Radio) project, launched at the end of 2017 by a4ESSOR and OCCAR (Organization Conjointe de Coopération en matière d'Armement) on behalf of Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland.

Emitech, a company specializing in applied testing for product qualification in the automotive sector, has inaugurated its new vehicle test center in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France. The EMC chamber is equipped with a complete EMC test system from Rohde & Schwarz including R&S BBA150, R&S BBA130 and R&S BBL200 broadband amplifiers, R&S ESW44 test receivers, R&S SMB100B RF signal generators and power meters. In collaboration with the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC), the test and measurement expert has successfully characterized a TX/RX multi-antenna chip (CHARM) operating at up to 140 GHz, using their D-Band over-the-air (OTA) test chamber. Academia and industry leaders agree that the 110 GHz to 170 GHz frequency range, known as D-Band, is critical for beyond 5G and 6G mobile communications and future automotive radar applications.
