Rohde & Schwarz's walk-through security scanner receives certification from European Civil Aviation Conference

Rohde & Schwarz has achieved a significant milestone, receiving approval of detection capability from the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) for its QPS Walk2000, making it the world’s first walk-through millimeter wave security scanner allowed for use at airports. This certification underscores that the advanced scanner meets ECAC's rigorous aviation security detection requirements for screening on-person threats. With this approval in hand, Rohde & Schwarz is set to deploy these advanced scanners throughout the European Union, enhancing passenger screening at airports across the region to an unprecedented level.

The approval was achieved after Rohde & Schwarz successfully passed the Common Evaluation Process (CEP) employed test carried out by the ECAC laboratories. The CEP is designed to evaluate security equipment against ECAC/EU performance standards, providing a common reference point for national administrations when certifying or approving security equipment at airports. When equipment meets these standards, as confirmed by the CEP, it becomes automatically eligible for EU approval and the "EU Stamp" marking.

People can now walk through the security scanner at a natural pace and with normal posture. The millimeter-wave technology used in the QPS Walk2000 penetrates clothing while an avatar pinpoints potentially dangerous objects in real time. If an alarm is triggered, security personnel can focus on the specific indicated area instead of having to completely pat-down or rescan the passenger.

The QPSWalk2000 is already in use at the Frankfurt airport, marking it as the world’s first airport to regularly employ walk-through scanners for passenger security checks. Following this success, Rohde & Schwarz plans to run several trials at important airports across Europe.

"We appreciate the efforts of the ECAC and look forward to working with airports and air carriers of the 44 member states, to deliver next-generation security capabilities and improve the passenger experience for travelers all over Europe," said Andreas Haegele, Vice President Microwave Imaging at Rohde & Schwarz.
