The new R&S RTS radar test system from Rohde & Schwarz simulates driving scenarios for testing radar based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and radar sensors used in autonomously driving cars (AD) entirely over the air. The test solution consists of the new R&S AREG800A automotive radar echo generator as a backend and the R&S QAT100 antenna array as a frontend. Laterally moving objects, i.e. objects approaching from the side, are currently simulated by mechanically moving antennas. The R&S RTS replaces the mechanical movement by electronically switching individual antennas in the frontend on and off. Even objects moving laterally to the car at very high speed can be simulated reliably and reproducibly. The R&S RTS is able to simulate the radial velocity (Doppler shift) and the size (radar cross section) of objects at user configurable – including very small – ranges. Countless objects can be represented by cascading multiple R&S AREG800A backends. The R&S RTS moves tests currently performed on the road to the lab. This allows early error detection and a significant reduction in costs.

As a consequence, the first RRM conformance FR2 work items have reached “active” status, making them mandatory for mobile device certification. Rohde & Schwarz has introduced not just one but two new maximum frequencies for the R&S SMW200A vector signal generator, bringing previously impossible high performance to digitally modulated signals up to 67 GHz and beyond. The R&S SMW200A is first to enable flat frequency response and 2 GHz modulation bandwidth above 44 GHz. In addition to all applications already supported up to 44 GHz, the 100 kHz to 56 GHz option covers all currently used 5G frequencies, plus earth-to-satellite applications. The 100 kHz to 67 GHz option also supports planned higher frequency 5G bands, the 60 GHz WiGig band, and inter-satellite links.

AFMETCAL, the Air Force Metrology and Calibration Authority, has ordered signal source analyzers (SSA) from Rohde & Schwarz. They will be operated in AFMETCAL’s precision measurement equipment laboratories (PMEL’s) and Air Force primary standards laboratory (AFPSL). The signal source analyzers are used for calibration of phase noise analog (AM, FM & PM) and digital modulation measurements.
