Questo documento è diviso in due parti e inizia con un'introduzione ai principi generali della conversione AC-DC. Presenterà i circuiti più comuni utilizzati per i diversi livelli di potenza. L'argomento principale sarà l'alimentatore con convertitore di potenza a commutazione (SMPS), essendo un sistema utilizzato praticamente ovunque in elettronica. In particolare, viene evidenziata la progettazione del dispositivo in diverse varianti. Tutte le misure, tuttavia, sono applicabili anche ad altri progetti di convertitori SMPS che operano a livelli di potenza più elevati.Nella seconda parte di questo documento sono evidenziati i metodi e le procedure di test più importanti di un convertitore AC-DC. Per ogni sezione di test verrà discussa una parte fondamentale, seguita dalla presentazione di un metodo di misura adeguato. Nella seconda parte, il dispositivo in esame (DUT) è considerato un dispositivo a scatola nera e la struttura, pertanto, è analoga. Quindi, le metodologie di test sono costituite da procedure relative ai test sulla sezione di ingresso, test sulla sezione di uscita e da una combinazione di entrambe, come per la misura dell'efficienza. Naturalmente, alcuni test eseguiti sull'uscita del convertitore sono rilevanti anche per i convertitori DC-DC, ad esempio per la validazione dell'ondulazione di uscita (ripple).
